Trading Places Exhibition, Sabaki Space

Haizhu District, Guangzhou

9-31 December 2011

This exhibition followed my ‘Military Craft’ performance. Since Xiao Zhao Cun is a modest sized water village and the proximity of the gallery is very close to Yao Yao gallery, many of the inhabitants attended my performance so I wanted to extend the significance and meaning of Military Craft, offering a different context for those who had taken part by placing it back into gallery space and sharing my performance with those who had not seen it. I believed it was a perfect chance to consider live and documentation whilst restaging the story and sequence of my performance, installing it alongside new work that I made specifically in relation to the space and the many temples and sites of worship scattered across the village. I do not believe that performance art necessarily exists in puritan form as abstracted from other art disciplines. It was important for me to show how the figure I became as part of my performance could adapt to new spaces without emptying out meaning, and for my dialogue to continue the notion of participation in terms of a new relationship with the villagers as viewer and their response to my installation that drew on their surroundings.

I took advantage of the gallery’s corner position and open shop fronted window space to generate an event approach to the exhibition where audiences observed the installation and projection from the outside, in accompaniment to the externally installed audio. I observed that this led people to talk to each other more during viewing, and share what they were viewing. Attendance on my opening included local shop owners, hoteliers and restaurant staff from those places I had frequented during my 7 day stay as well as fellow Guangzhou Live artists and passers by.

On pieces of tissue I wrote different ‘fortune cookie’ messages which I folded and attached to my military

uniform during my performance ‘Military Craft’ using colourful pegs. At the end of the performance,

through chance selection using my chopstick diving rod, I shared these messages out to individual

audience recipients who took the message for him/herself.

This was the last one that happened to be left and attached to my dress.

The messages were in the same spirit that words were exchanged from myself to those under the

umbrella in the circular gathering concluding ‘Military Craft’.
